It's true, Apple switching to Intel.

In a stunning move, Steve Jobs announced that Apple will begin transitioning to Intel CPUs in its computer products next year. Apple has been disappointed with the performance of the PowerPC 970, especially IBM's inability to deliver a 3.0GHz part. In addition, Apple has been hampered by heat and power issues, ruling out the possibility of a G5 PowerBook. As a result, the first Mac to ship with Intel Inside will be released by June 6, 2006, and the transition should be complete in 2007.

It has long been rumored that Apple was keeping a nice little Intel box tucked away somewhere running OS X, and it turns out this is true. Speaking to developers, Jobs said that every build of OS X has also been built on the Intel platform. Jobs said that Apple had dedicated teams for a "just in case scenario," and that the company had decided a long time ago to make sure that the OS was platform independent. This "secret double life," as Jobs referred to it, means that a transition can be done smoothly over the next few years, and Jobs seemed to exude some confidence, showing Tiger running on an Intel demo box.

Hopefully this will mean a price drop in G5's if nothing else. I've always been a fan of the power arch. if nothing else.

As for running on intel chips... I dunno. We'll see. I'm assuming that first computer released will be mobile. It only makes sense.

Okay, I am not sure whether to sigh or scream, since I want to believe that Mac is still the underdog, but the complete shattering of this illusion seems imminent.
